Youngsters Primed For Australian Junior Quarter Midget Championship Battle
4/03/2009 12:50:31 PM - Daniel Powell

For the first time in its history the Australian Junior Quarter Midget Championship will be fought out at Gunnedah Speedway in North Western NSW this Sunday (March 8) in what promises to be a hard fought battle.

After the past two years being staged at Avalon Raceway in Victoria; the 2009 running of the Australian Junior Quarter Midget Championship is venturing out of Victoria for the very first occasion to Gunnedah Speedway.

Young drivers aged between 6 and 16 years, across two classes 120cc and 160cc, are set to fight it out in the Australian Junior Quarter Midget Championship. This year’s Australian Junior Quarter Midget Championship is to see drivers converge from Victoria and the host state of New South Wales.

In the 160cc class the defending Australian Championship is Victorian Daniel Burleigh who defeated Zane Jordan and Tyler Carter, while in the 120cc class the reigning champion is Danny Carroll and he ended up finishing ahead of both Bryce Carter and Clayton Small in second and third place in last year’s event.

Taking up the charge for the NSW brigade for this year’s Australian Championship are the likes of former Australian Championship holder and current NSW Champion Mitch Brien in the 160cc class. Joining Brien in the 160cc is current NSW # 3 Kyle Caunt and Ben Wright. Not to be outdone is the lone girl entrant in the 160cc class Rylee Walsh and she is keen to take up the challenge to her boy rivals.

Although they may not have a home track advantage a host of Victorian’s are keen to get amongst the winner’s circle in the 160cc class.

The 120cc class the Australian Championship battle will be fierce from the get go and the list of challenges is to include: current Australian Championship # 3 Clayton Small, Lachlan Caunt, Jayke Brien, Kemble Walsh and the ever improving Ellie Small all from New South Wales and then there are Victorian entrants Jordyn Charge and Luke Dingley. With the 120cc class field being so hotly contested picking a favourite is quite a tough task.

Junior Quarter Midgets are regarded as one of the stepping stones for youngster aiming to get into Speedway competition from the age of six. Many of the competitors in this year’s Australian Championship hold aspirations to reach greater heights in Speedway and who knows you could be watching a future champion in action.

Practice for the Australian Championship to be held on Saturday from 1pm and Sunday’s race action is set to begin from 10am. The Australian Championship race format for both the 120cc and 160cc classes is three heat races for each driver and the Australian Championship deciding feature races over a distance of 30 laps each.

Gunnedah Speedway is located on Bluevale Road, Gunnedah.
