Brien Brothers Ready To Tackle Aussie Junior Quarter Midget Championship
4/03/2009 12:48:47 PM - Daniel Powell
The 2009 Australian Junior Quarter Midget Championship is to be battled out at Gunnedah Speedway this Sunday (March 8) and the Brien brothers, Mitch and Jayke, are both looking to continue their successful 2008/09 season by posting victory in their respective 160cc and 120cc classes.
Based on the Central Coast of NSW, both Mitch and Jayke are very much looking forward to contesting the Australian Championship at their home track, Gunnedah Speedway in North Western NSW, and that has certainly given them added confidence in their chase for success.
The oldest of the Brien brothers, Mitch, knows what it takes to win the Australian Championship having been successful in 2007 at Avalon Raceway down in Victoria and after disappointingly finishing off the podium in fourth place during his Australian Championship defence last year the 16-year-old has only one goal and that is to get the Australian Championship trophy back in his grasp for the 160cc class.
“I am very determined to win back the Australian Championship and having it staged at Gunnedah Speedway gives me plenty of extra confidence,” Brien said. “Last year’s Australian Championship left me disappointed as I was running second in the feature race only to make a mistake and drop down the field and finish back in fourth. Gunnedah Speedway is one of my favourite tracks and I am very much looking forward to having the Australian Championship staged there for the very first time.”
For Brien the 2008/09 season is the very last he will compete in before he steps up into the senior ranks of Speedway competition and that is another motivation to win back the Australian Championship.
10-year-old Jayke Brien is just as enthusiastic as his older sibling for the Australian Championship and he has his eyes firming fixed on a podium finish in the Australian Championship deciding feature race in the 120cc class. Brien carries good form into the 2009 Australian Championship as he currently leads the NSW Club Championship point standings for the 120cc class.
“Last season I finished the NSW Title on the podium and I would like to be able to do that in the Australian Championship too and it doesn’t matter where I finish on the podium just as long I do it,” Jayke enthused. “I really enjoy running at Gunnedah Speedway and it’s great that the Australian Championship is coming to our home track and it would be great to finish with a strong result.”
Although both Mitch and Jayke Brien are very keen to post good results in their respective classes in this Sunday’s Australian Championship they’re happy to do the best they can and enjoy their passion of Speedway racing with the rest of their supportive family.
Both Mitch and Jayke Brien would like thank their Mum and Dad (Helen and Dave Brien), along with their sponsors: Dave Brien Automotive, Top of the Block Head Service, Central Coast Manual Gearbox & Diff, Coastal Driveline Specialist and Race Shirts 4 U for all their ongoing support.
